New EN 13724 standard – important for planners, home owners and apartment block management!
Please be aware that South Africa Post Office requires the EN 13724 standard.
Postboxes are used for delivery of letters to residential and business areas. There is a requirement to install boxes at new development areas especially townhouses and security complexes.
This standard lays down the requirements and tests for openings when posting mail. The most important requirements of this standard are:
1. Classification of the 4 different types of letter openings (outside,
inside, slide-through, door/side wall).
2. Laying down 2 different opening sizes (325-400 mm for horizontal opening and 230-280 mm for longitudinal opening, opening height 30-35 mm).
3. Degree of resistance to corrosion as complying with EN 1670 and to water penetration. (240 hrs – salt spray test)
4. Resistance to burglary due to use of sturdy materials and locks sub- divided into 2 security steps.
5. It must be possible to post a test envelope in the C4 format without it being folded or damaged.
6. The centre line of the letter openings is to be between an overall height of 700 mm - 1700 mm; in exceptional circumstances the range can be between 400 mm and 1800 mm.
7. To ensure safety, letter opening components are not to have any sharp edges.
8. To ensure confidentiality, mail boxes are not to be fitted out with windows.
9. Removal security devices to prevent unauthorised removal of mail.
10. A stacked height of min. 40 mm in the C4 format is laid down as the minimum volume.
